Since 2018, Makersmiths has sponsored KidWind teams. What is KidWind? It is an initiative to teach youth about renewable energies as they go through an engineering process of designing, building and testing wind turbines or solar projects. PBS filmed our teams a year ago and we were featured on the This American Land TV series. Meet our teams by viewing: https://vimeo.com/995471444
We are looking for youth in grades 9-12 to join our high school wind turbine team. The team will be coached by Makersmiths member Oliver Arend. We will meet in Great Falls, VA, on Sunday mornings from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Occasionally, we may carpool to or meet at the Makersmiths locations in Leesburg or Purcellville to use the tools available there.
We will participate in the Northern Virginia Regional KidWind challenge, an all-day event, at the Potomac Science Center in Woodbridge on Tuesday, March 17.
The team will be competing at the high school level in the Open Category, which means that design and fabrication of the turbine are more complex. Team members are expected to have a laptop available to them to work on design, documentation and presentation; ideally, it is a personal and not a school-issued laptop so they can install additional software as needed.
Parents must sign this waiver form and indicate the student's name and grade. Please complete the online waiver at https://waiver.fr/p-NVPOj
