In this class, we'll take your CNC skills to the next level using Fusion 360 CAM.

This course is designed for those who are familiar with design in Fusion 360, or those who are learning to design things in Fusion 360.  The CAM portion is easier than you'd think, once you know how.

I've created a guide that's over 120 pages that will let anyone make a Fusion 360 model into a milled project using Big Red.  The guide is divided into 6 parts:

  • Part 1 - We'll look at some prerequisite knowledge to bring everyone onto the same page regarding knowledge of CNC, Mach4 Loader, differences between Fusion 360 and VCarve, things we learned in the Big Red signoff, how not to hurt yourself, and how not to hurt the machine.
  • Part 2 - We'll dig deeper into feeds and speeds, and look at things that will help you before you buy an end mill.  We'll also look at a couple of tips for modeling that will help you when it comes time to generate toolpaths.
  • Part 3 - We'll dig into the many ways you can create machining setups to mill your project.
  • Part 4 - We'll learn the most important features of a few toolpaths for milling 2D and 3D models.
  • Part 5 - We'll look at ways to take your milling skills to the next level.  We'll learn how to bring your own reference datum to the machine so you can precisely position your stock on the machine bed, squaring with the machine, cutting all the way to the edge of your stock, and milling on both sides of your project to make two-sided projects.
  • Part 6 - At the end, I'll also provide some exercises you can run on your own that will help cement your knowledge of everything in the guide.

This will be a 2-hour, classroom-only class.  We'll work through the guide on the classroom TV using Fusion 360 to generate toolpaths, and you'll leave with a copy of the guide. This means that if you get very busy in the next few months, you'll be able to open up the guide and quickly get back up to speed with Fusion 360 CAM.  Questions are always welcome outside of the class, but the main goal is to provide a high enough quality guide that after completing the class it contains everything you'd need to know to do advanced CNC work with Fusion 360 on your own.

This class won't make you a CNC expert, but with what you'll learn here, you definitely won't be a novice.

We won't review every single detail of toolpaths, or even review every toolpath that Fusion offers, but after this class you'll have enough knowledge to generate your own toolpaths for any project in just a short amount of time.

This is also not a design class, we'll only be looking at the CAM portion of Fusion 360, outside of a few tips that will help make your design more CNC-friendly.
