MS-P-KidWind Workshop

  • 11/03/2018
  • 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM
  • MS-Purcellville Green Room

Registration is Closed for the Afternoon Session

The Center for Wind Energy at James Madison University (JMU) and Makersmiths, Inc. are partnering to present this introductory KidWind hands-on workshop at Makersmiths for the purpose of learning about wind energy, how windmills and generators work, which blades work best and how we can design and construct better blades.

As a result of this workshop, participants will understand the purpose of the KidWind Challenge, an ultimate wind energy learning experience for elementary, middle and high school students around the country.  Workshop participants will be invited to form a Makersmiths' KidWind Challenge team at their appropriate grade level with the overall goal to have fun building a device that converts moving wind into electricity.

What is a KidWind Challenge? While participating in a KidWind Challenge, students will learn about physics, engineering, environmental science and policy as they:

  • Conduct background research, plan and build an innovative and functional turbine that will produce power.
  • As a team, students will test their team’s turbine and calculate its power output to improve its design.

Note: Our Makersmiths KidWind Challenge teams will compete in the Northern Viriginia Challenge on March 15 (Friday) at Shenandoah University.
